The Lansdowne Cantonment is located in Uttarakhand’s Distt Pauri Garhwal. On the advice of Field Marshal Sir FS Roberts, C-in-C India, it was decided to form a separate Garhwali Regiment in 1886. Brig Gen JI Murray, GOC, Rohilkhand Distt, authorized the location of the Cantonment and the Regiment, which was a virgin forest known as Kalundanda and was around 6000 feet high. Kalundanda was named for the oak and rhododendron woodland that took on a darker tinge when viewed from afar in the dreary, foggy weather that prevailed here.

21, Sep 1890 Kalundanda was renamed after Lord Henry as Lansdowne and this is how it gets its name ” Lansdowne” after the name of the viceroy of India.

On November 4th, 1887, the 1st Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles, led by Lt Col EP Mainwaring, arrived at Kalundanda. They contributed to the construction of a link between their temporary camp on the Post Office Parade Ground and the Main Parade Ground. The Garhwal Rifles’ troops built the first set of barracks, known as the Mainwaring lines. As a result, the new lines were given the name “Mainwaring Lines” in honor of the first Commanding Officer.

The Garhwal Rifles Regiment’s Training Centre is now located at Lansdowne Cantonment. Lansdowne is located near popular tourist destinations such as Badrinath, Kedarnath, Hemkund Sahib, Valley of Flowers, and Corbett National Park.

Lansdowne Travel Tips

When you think of a weekend getaway or a brief holiday from Delhi, there are several places that come to mind. Shimla, Mussoorie, and Rishikesh are among the most popular destinations, but the little hamlet of Lansdowne is one that few tourists consider. It’s a stunningly beautiful and very easy-to-reach hill station in Uttarakhand that’s ideal for a weekend escape.

It’s a terrific destination for a quick journey because of the short distance and easier ascent, but the long list of tourist attractions it has to offer can keep you in this delightful small hamlet for days. In this article, I’ll provide you with a step-by-step approach to planning a trip to Lansdowne.

  1. If you plan to travel on a weekend, make a reservation in advance. If you’re on a budget, go on a weekday.
  2. The cantonment area will arrive first as you approach Lansdowne, and this is when folks get a little confused. Simply continue driving through the Cantt till you reach the main chowk, which is the genuine Lansdowne. There will be a lot of activity, including vehicles, hotels, and restaurants, with a large circle in the middle to let you know when you’ve arrived.
  3. Only stay in a hotel near the main chowk, in my opinion. The Mayur Hotel is highly rated in this area.
  4. Do not take photographs of Army structures. It’s against the law, and you could face consequences.
  5. Remember to watch the sunrise and sunset from Tip n Top.
  6. If you’re having problems obtaining a parking spot, go to the police station right away. A large empty area is used as parking directly in front of the police station. You can keep your automobile safely parked there for no cost.
The fact that Lansdowne is not too far away is the main reason for visiting. The majority of the route is actually on plains, with only the last 35 to 40 kilometers requiring driving through the hills. Except for a few rough areas here and there, the roads are mainly in fair condition. The journey to Lansdowne will not be too long or exhausting. So, what are you waiting for? just Plan your trip and GO!
